Pay Parity Powers Professional Progress: Aarika’s Journey

The New Mexico Early Childhood Education and Care Department (ECECD), in partnership with CNM Ingenuity, is dedicated to supporting infant-toddler teachers through scholarship and pay incentive programs and professional development. Initiatives like the Infant Toddler Teacher Pay Parity Program provide essential financial support, enabling infant-toddler educators to advance their careers, pursue further education, and balance professional growth with personal life. In addition to financial support, programs like the Infant-Toddler Teacher Network provide infant-toddler teachers with monthly opportunities for collaboration and support from colleagues and leaders in the field. Together, these programs ensure New Mexico’s infant-toddler teachers have the support they need to excel and nurture the next generation.

The Infant Toddler Pay Parity Program has been a transformative force in Aarika Smith’s career as an early childhood educator. Working at Kids Corner Learning Center in Farmington, New Mexico, Aarika has been in the field for six years, and the Pay Parity Program has provided financial stability and fueled her professional growth and personal development.

“Without the Pay Parity Program, I would have never known I could be making more money doing what I love,” Aarika explains. “It’s been life-changing for me and my family.”

Over the past year, Aarika has sharpened her leadership skills, boosting her confidence in mentoring new teachers and guiding them in building strong connections with children and families. “I’ve gained so much confidence. Now I mentor new teachers and help them connect with kids and parents,” she shares.

The Pay Parity Program motivated Aarika to pursue further education with the help of the ECECD Scholarship. She is working toward her bachelor’s degree and plans to earn a master’s in early childhood education. “The more I learn, the better I become in the classroom. I want to keep growing as a teacher, and these opportunities are helping me do that.”
